Katja: “When creating ‘Spoken Letter to the Travel Tribe,' I was put on the spot by the talented videographer and editor of Rewild, Alistair Danes, with questions so important and meaningful that I struggled to find the words. You know when you get nervous just because what you are doing and trying to communicate means so much?  The question he asked was: “If you could speak to your people at the frontline today, in your concessions, what message would you give them?”

From her home and her heart to yours, Hideaways CEO Katja Quasdorf shares words of solidarity and inspiration as we go forward, together. In the shared passion for Africa and the love of travel, Katja empathises with all members of the travel tribe, as we accompany each other through this journey. Broadening our horizons, Hideaways is expanding its safari experience from land to water, and what more iconic African lake to explore than that of Lake Kariba. Welcoming Masumu River Lodge, Binga and the Sovereign Houseboat into the Hideaways fold, we now offer a channel to another world of African adventure. Lake Kariba captures one’s soul, painting it into the gold and orange sky at sunset.

An Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) is a vital resource in the fight for conservation. They do important groundwork that prevents and minimises the impact of poachers. Elephant’s Eye, Hwange’s APU is made up of a serious group of men who aren’t the most talkative bunch, but who do know their job is meaningful, purposeful and crucial.

Hideaways is adding an exclusive new experience on the Zambezi River. Zambezi Truth involves two romantic East African style dhows that will escort guests on a Bohemian dream drifting along the Zambezi River at sunset & sunrise. Guests will be treated to cocktails and canapes aboard a luxurious traditional boat decked out with soft colourful cushions and sparkling lanterns.

At Hideaways, we are deeply committed to conserving the wildlife in one of the world’s last remaining wilderness areas, Hwange National Park. Together with Conservation & Wildlife Fund (CWF) we enact what we have identified as effective measures to fight poaching and protect the people and animals in an around the park.

Most of us have learned in life that good things don’t last forever, but when something comes to an end a new chapter begins. This month, we are bidding farewell to Blessed Chalibamba, who has not only been managing our eco-lodge Elephant’s Eye, Hwange for the past 4 years but has literally built it to what it is today. (He was on site when every single screw was put into the decking and the big Gum poles sunk into the ground).

Hideaways is committed to improving the lives of those living in the Dingani community close to our lodge Elephant’s Eye, Hwange, either through employment, supporting local businesses or through the various projects organized through the Grow Africa Foundation.

Elephant's Eye, Hwange is becoming even more family friendly! In addition to kids staying for free (when sharing a chalet with 2 adults) we have included some exciting kid-friendly activities.

Education is a lifeline for many children in Zimbabwe, offering a path to a better life. However, the village school at Dingani, near Elephant’s Eye, Hwange, is significantly under-staffed and in urgent need of assistance. With over 350 children, the 6 teachers employed by the government are facing daily challenges. The Grow Africa Foundation has sponsored the employment of an Early Childhood Development teacher at the school, Yolanda Ncube, who was born in the village of Dingani, graduated as a teacher 2 years ago and has been helping at Dingani Primary since 2018.

As the CEO of a company where she started as a young intern, Katja Quasdorf is assuredly ambitious, determined and resilient, which is why she will be one of the inspiring speakers at the upcoming Amplify Journeys Annual Women’s Summits in October. The first summit will take place at the Cradle of Humankind Taking on 21 October,  with a pre-summit event from 19 - 20 October. The second summit will be in Franschhoek on 26 October to give as many people as possible an opportunity to attend this immersive experience.
