Sierra Leone is set to host the UN Women in Tourism Africa Regional Congress from 29-31 October 2024 in Freetown. The event, themed "Beyond Empowerment to Education, Innovation, and Finance Access", aims to advance women's roles in the tourism sector.

Organised in collaboration with UN Tourism and supported by UN Women and the African Union, the congress will bring together leaders, policymakers, and women entrepreneurs from across Africa. It will focus on providing tangible tools and resources for women to succeed in tourism, where they make up nearly 67% of the workforce but remain underrepresented in leadership roles.

The three-day event will feature panel discussions, mentorship opportunities, and workshops on financial access and digital tools. It aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality and quality education.

Hon. Nabeela Farida Tunis, Sierra Leone's Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, emphasised the congress's importance in equipping women with necessary tools for success. Elicia Grandcourt, Director of UNWTO's Regional Department for Africa, stressed the need to remove barriers preventing women from reaching their full potential in tourism.
