Kenya reveals details of new digital nomad visa scheme
Following President William Ruto's initial announcement at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo, further details have emerged about Kenya's forthcoming digital nomad visa programme.
The East African nation has confirmed that remote workers seeking to participate in the scheme must demonstrate an annual income of at least $55,000 (about 42,000 GBP) and provide proof of remote employment with a company outside of Kenya. Additional requirements include evidence of local accommodation and a clean criminal record.
To support the initiative, Kenya is expanding its digital infrastructure nationwide. Although the country already offers some of Africa's most reliable internet connectivity, with strong coverage across major cities and 4G access in remote areas.
The visa scheme forms part of Kenya's broader tourism strategy, complementing the recently announced Transit and Long Connection Travelers' Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) programme.
Kenya joins several countries around the world – including Japan, Thailand and Italy – in launching digital nomad visas this year. The nation's attractions, from the Masai Mara to the Lamu Archipelago, combined with its growing tech scene and reputation as a safe country for visitors, positions it as an attractive destination for remote professionals.
