Zambia Airports Corporation Limited Clarifies Concerns Over Solwezi Airport
Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) has confirmed that Solwezi Airport, the main aviation facility in North-Western Province, remains fully operational despite concerns over nearby gully erosion. ZACL Managing Director, Ngoza Matakala, assured that the erosion has not affected the runway or disrupted flight schedules, with robust inspections and mitigation measures in place. The gully, located in the vicinity of the airport, is being closely monitored, and expertise from the Geological Survey Department and Department of Water Affairs has been engaged to address the issue.
Plans to implement remedial works this year follow a detailed assessment undertaken in 2024. Additionally, ZACL has announced long-term plans for a new greenfield airport in Solwezi, with feasibility studies currently led by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics. This development aligns with ZACL's commitment to ensuring safe and efficient air travel infrastructure to support Zambia's connectivity within the region and beyond.
