Africa-Caribbean Direct Flights in Development as Travel and Trade Ties Strengthen
Plans to introduce direct air links between Africa and the Caribbean are gaining momentum, with regular routes expected to launch in the coming months. This follows a landmark non-stop flight from Nigeria to St. Kitts earlier this month, with discussions now underway to expand routes—starting with a proposed connection to Algeria for the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) in September. The initiative, spearheaded by Afreximbank and regional stakeholders, aims to enhance both tourism and cross-continental trade.
While there are currently no direct flights between South Africa and the Caribbean, the proposed routes would significantly improve connectivity for African travellers to destinations across the region, including Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago. The effort is part of Afreximbank’s broader vision to foster a dynamic Africa-Caribbean ecosystem, encouraging cultural ties, commerce, and diaspora connections. Several Caribbean countries already offer visa-free access to South African passport holders, positioning the region as an attractive emerging market for leisure and trade-focused travel.
