Qantas to Launch Direct Perth-Johannesburg Flights in 2025

Australian airline Qantas has announced plans to start non-stop flights between Perth and Johannesburg next year once upgrades are completed at Perth Airport. The multi-billion-dollar investment will include new terminal facilities and a parallel runway to allow the airport to handle more passengers and larger aircraft like the Airbus A350.

The upgrades begin with enhancements to Terminals 3 and 4 used by Qantas. This increases capacity to enable new long-haul routes like the planned Perth-Johannesburg and Perth-Auckland services, subject to regulatory approval. Currently, South African Airways is the only airline flying direct between the two cities after resuming flights last month following a four-year hiatus.

Qantas had intended to launch its own Perth-Johannesburg flight previously but scrapped plans due to constraints at the existing airport facilities. With the upgrades, competition will heat up on this route when the new Qantas service commences, likely in mid-2024 using Airbus A350 aircraft it begins receiving in 2026.
