OR Tambo Confirms Jet Fuel Supply Amid Refinery Disruption
OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) has assured sufficient jet fuel supply for January, despite a fire at South Africa’s Natref refinery affecting national production. The airport currently holds 27.1 million litres of jet fuel, equivalent to around 7.6 days of operational capacity based on daily consumption of 3.6 million litres. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is collaborating with industry stakeholders to address the February fuel requirements, which total 97.2 million litres, ahead of the refinery’s scheduled reopening on 27 February 2025.
Key measures to mitigate potential supply disruptions include diversifying fuel sources, prioritising stock transportation from Durban via Transnet, and building reserves at King Shaka International Airport, which has surplus capacity. Airlines and suppliers are also employing strategies like fuel tankering to manage fuel needs. Meanwhile, ACSA continues to work with government agencies, the Fuels Industry Association of Southern Africa, and other partners to ensure operational continuity at South Africa’s busiest airport.
