Seychelles tourism officials are eagerly awaiting the launch of a direct, non-stop charter flight from Chengdu, China, set to commence in November. Operated by Sichuan Airlines, this new route is expected to significantly increase Chinese visitor numbers to the Indian Ocean archipelago. Chengdu is China’s fourth most populous city.

Sherin Francis, Principal Secretary for Tourism, expressed optimism about the development following an event at the Chinese Embassy showcasing opportunities in Chengdu Province. Francis highlighted the importance of diversifying Seychelles' tourism market, which has traditionally relied heavily on European visitors.

Statistics reveal a promising trend, with Chinese arrivals in 2024 already up 87% compared to the previous year, totalling 2,035 visitors. The direct flight is anticipated to further boost these numbers, rekindling the success Seychelles experienced during previous periods of direct air links with China.

Beyond tourism, the new route is expected to foster increased business and cultural exchanges between the two nations. Local travel agents are actively developing packages for Seychellois interested in visiting Chengdu, a major economic hub in Sichuan province.
