Global airlines see demand up 8% in July, Africa grows 7.4%

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported an 8.0% increase in global passenger demand for July 2024 compared to the previous year, with a total load factor of 86.0%. While international demand grew by 10.1% and domestic demand rose by 4.8%, capacity increased by only 7.4%, indicating that demand is outpacing supply.

IATA's Director General, Willie Walsh, noted that July saw passenger demand hit an all-time high for the industry, with all regions except Africa recording growth. However, persistent supply chain issues have made it challenging for the industry to deploy the necessary capacity to meet the surging travel demand.

Regionally, Asia-Pacific airlines saw the strongest growth at 19.1%, while Latin American carriers experienced a 13.4% year-on-year increase. Africa's airlines also performed well, with a 7.4% rise in demand. Despite the CrowdStrike IT outage in July, the overall impact on demand was minimal.
