The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports a significant surge in passenger traffic for African airlines in January 2024. Compared to January 2023, traffic jumped by an impressive 18.5%.

This growth indicates a strong recovery for the African aviation sector, which faced challenges in recent years. However, it's worth noting that capacity increases outpaced traffic growth. Available seat capacity rose by 19.2%, leading to a slight decline in load factor to 73.3%, the lowest amongst all regions globally.

Despite this, the overall picture for African airlines remains optimistic. The substantial traffic increase suggests a rising demand for air travel within Africa and potentially reflects growing interest in the continent as a tourist destination. Airlines in the region will likely focus on strategically adjusting capacity to meet this evolving demand and optimise their operations in the coming months.
