Tanzania urges investment in beekeeping for conservation
Tanzania's Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Danstan Kitandula, has called for increased investment in the beekeeping sector. During a visit to the East Usambara Mountains Conservation Fund (EAMCEF) on 3 August 2024, Kitandula emphasised the sector's potential for both environmental conservation and economic growth.
The minister inspected a beekeeping project in Mkwakwani Village, Korogwe District, aimed at reducing deforestation. He highlighted bees' crucial role in crop pollination and income generation through honey and beeswax production.
Kitandula stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the government and stakeholders to increase productivity. He also noted the sector's economic benefits, including soap production and significant domestic and international market opportunities.
EAMCEF Executive Director Francis Sabuni explained that the project helps combat deforestation caused by human activities. The fund provides annual grants of 1 billion Tanzanian shillings for eco-friendly projects in the East Usambara Mountains area.
Local beekeepers reported improved livelihoods, with honey production increasing from 115 litres in 2022 to 160 litres in 2021, despite climate change challenges. The Korogwe District Commissioner pledged continued support for environmental protection initiatives.
