Rwanda Launches Ecosystem Restoration Project in Nyungwe–Ruhango Corridor
Rwanda has secured a $9 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to restore ecosystems and strengthen climate resilience across the Nyungwe–Ruhango Corridor in the country’s Southern Province. The initiative, part of the GEF-8 Ecosystem Restoration Integrated Program, will be implemented by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority and aims to rehabilitate over 2,000 hectares of forests and wetlands, and promote sustainable land management on nearly 9,000 hectares of farmland.
The project is expected to benefit more than 289,000 people across Ruhango, Nyanza, and Nyamagabe Districts, with a focus on improving agricultural productivity, reducing climate risks, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. It is projected to create over 2,200 jobs, particularly for youth, through green economy activities such as agroforestry, fruit tree planting, and non-timber forest product value chains. The programme complements wider World Bank-supported conservation investments in Rwanda and supports key goals under the country’s National Strategy for Transformation.
