Sierra Leone is on track to be removed from the European Union's aviation blacklist by the end of 2025, according to the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA). Under the leadership of Director General Musayeroh Barrie, the SLCAA has made substantial progress in addressing the safety issues that led to the inclusion on the blacklist. Two successful meetings with the EU safety commission have resulted in a comprehensive roadmap aimed at resolving regulatory concerns, a move anticipated to strengthen the country's aviation sector.

While the EU ban does not currently impact Air Sierra Leone, as the national carrier operates on regional routes using a Nigerian Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and on UK routes under a UK AOC, lifting the ban is expected to have wider implications. The decision would enhance international air connections, offering new growth opportunities for Sierra Leone’s tourism and economy. It also positions the country as a more accessible destination for global travellers, further integrating it into the international travel network.
