RwandAir Aims to Double Fleet in Five Years

RwandAir has announced plans to expand its route network across Eastern and Southern Africa as it adapts to regional airspace challenges and positions for profitability by 2025. Speaking during the 13th Aviation Stakeholders Convention held in Kigali, CEO Yvonne Makolo confirmed that the airline will soon launch new direct services to Mombasa and Zanzibar to compensate for lost routes following the closure of DR Congo’s airspace to Kigali-based carriers.

The national airline is also aiming to double its fleet over the next five years, supported by rising revenues—up 82% in 2023 to Rwf620.6 billion. Makolo noted efforts to drive down operational costs through fleet standardisation and improved fuel efficiency, with further technological investment planned to enhance passenger experience. RwandAir currently serves 107 destinations and recently received nearly 2,000 applications for its pilot cadet programme, underlining growing interest in the carrier’s future trajectory.
