Malawi’s Mzuzu Airport to Resume Commercial Flights Following Maintenance Works
Malawi’s Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport, Peter Dimba, has announced maintenance works at Mzuzu Airport to extend the runway from 1,300 metres to 1,600 metres, enabling larger aircraft to land. Commercial flights, which ceased in 2010, are set to resume by March this year, with Malawi Airlines expected to operate 72-seat Bombardier aircraft from the airport. This development aligns with President Lazarus Chakwera’s State of the Nation address, where he emphasised the rehabilitation of Mzuzu Airport and Koronga Aerodrome as part of efforts to restore flights to northern Malawi. Flights to Koronga are projected to resume later this year.
The government views these upgrades as a temporary solution, with a long-term plan prioritising the construction of the new Orton-Chowa International Airport near Ekwendeni, for which funding is being secured. Dimba also highlighted updates on waterway transport projects, including the near completion of Lekomo Port and the modernisation of water transport infrastructure. This initiative, part of President Chakwera’s broader vision, aims to improve connectivity across the country while boosting tourism and economic development in northern Malawi.
