Jet Fuel Shortage Impacts OR Tambo as Mitigation Measures Roll Out
The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has confirmed ongoing efforts to address a jet fuel supply shortage at O.R. Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) following a fire at the NATREF refinery on 4 January 2025. The incident, which damaged the refinery’s Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), has disrupted jet fuel production, with the CDU not expected back online until 21 February. ACSA, in coordination with the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA) and NATREF, has implemented a range of mitigation measures, including rail and pipeline deliveries from Durban and Matola, Mozambique, and sourcing alternative fuel supplies from other airports.
Current jet fuel reserves at ORTIA are projected to cover demand until 20 January, with new supplies arriving by 27 January. Additional deliveries of 17,000m³ and 31,000m³ of jet fuel are scheduled, while contingency plans to bridge the potential supply gap are being developed, with updates expected by 14 January. ACSA is working closely with airlines and stakeholders to maintain uninterrupted airport operations at South Africa’s busiest hub, despite the challenges posed by the refinery fire.
