In a landmark move towards sustainable aviation, Ethiopian Airlines Group has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with Satarem America Inc. to produce and utilise Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Ethiopia. The agreement, signed on 3 August 2024 in Addis Ababa, marks a significant step in the airline's commitment to eco-friendly travel.

Under the terms of the MoU, Satarem will produce SAF locally, with Ethiopian Airlines pledging to purchase the cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel. This partnership is expected to substantially reduce the carrier's carbon footprint, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, hailed the collaboration as a reflection of the company's dedication to environmental stewardship and innovative solutions for a sustainable industry. The move builds upon the airline's existing green initiatives, including fleet modernisation, optimised flight operations, and extensive recycling programmes.
