Cape Town International Airport will undergo extensive renovations from 2026 to 2029 as part of Airports Company South Africa's (ACSA) R21.7 billion (about 955 million GBP) investment programme.

The upgrades will include construction of a new runway, expansion of both domestic and international terminals, and additional aircraft contact stands, according to ACSA Regional General Manager Mark Maclean. The airport will also receive enhanced security features including full-body scanners and expanded self-service boarding facilities.

The project is part of a wider modernisation of South African airports, including OR Tambo in Johannesburg, Chief Dawid Stuurman in Gqeberha and King Phalo in East London.

In related news, Johannesburg's Lanseria International Airport will also see significant improvements from 2026, including new maintenance facilities and upgraded taxiways to accommodate larger aircraft like Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s.

Lanseria CEO Rampa Rammopo said the developments aim to attract more airlines and expand routes, particularly to other African destinations, helping to make Southern Africa more accessible to international visitors.
