Zambia Activates Hotel Managers Registration Council to Strengthen Hospitality Oversight
Zambia's Minister of Tourism, Rodney Sikumba, has met with the newly appointed Hotel Managers Registration Council (HMRC) to mark the official start of the body's three-year tenure. The minister congratulated members on their appointment, noting that their selection reflects the government's confidence in their expertise and professionalism, while underscoring the council's role in upholding industry standards, ensuring regulatory compliance and strengthening consumer protection across the country's hospitality sub-sector.
Minister Sikumba used the meeting to update the council on a series of policy reforms under way at the Ministry of Tourism, including proposed amendments to tourism legislation, the establishment of the Zambia Travel and Tourism Agency and the formation of a Travel and Hospitality Professional Association of Zambia. He also encouraged the council to support the government's digital transformation agenda by transitioning from manual systems to online platforms, including the Government Service Bus. HMRC Chairperson Christabel Michel reaffirmed the council's commitment to its mandate, stating the body would focus on upholding professional standards, strengthening regulatory compliance and contributing to the competitiveness of Zambia's hospitality sector.
