Tunisia Pushes for Year-Round Tourism Model Amid Structural Reform Drive
Tunisia's tourism sector continues to record positive indicators despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, with industry leaders pressing for structural reforms to reduce reliance on seasonal demand. Jaleleddine Henchiri, Vice President of the Tunisian Hotel Federation, has called for a year-round tourism strategy, stronger domestic market development, and improved air connectivity to sustain growth. Speaking on Express FM, Henchiri noted that domestic tourism currently accounts for approximately 15% of overall tourism activity, with weaker household purchasing power constraining demand - prompting calls for year-round promotional campaigns and discounted offers to stimulate local travel.
Henchiri also stressed the need to restructure hotel properties and raise cleanliness and environmental standards, with greater coordination required across all industry stakeholders. Looking ahead, he said Tunisia has the capacity to welcome up to 15 million international visitors within the next two to three years, contingent on comprehensive reforms being implemented across the sector. He urged policymakers to recognise tourism as a strategic pillar of the national economy, arguing that sustained modernisation will strengthen Tunisia's contribution to economic growth and its competitiveness as an international destination.
