Malawi's Sunbird Hotels & Resorts used its participation at Meetings Africa 2026 to generate new business leads and showcase the country's growing conference infrastructure to an international audience. The annual trade platform, organised by South African Tourism, drew more than 300 exhibitors from over 20 African countries alongside hundreds of hosted buyers. For Sunbird, the event provided a timely opportunity to promote its newly launched Sunbird Livingstonia Conference Centre in Salima, a purpose-built facility on the shores of Lake Malawi capable of hosting up to 1,500 delegates, with a main plenary hall accommodating approximately 1,000 participants.

To support anticipated demand, Sunbird is expanding its accommodation capacity at the Salima complex, adding 60 rooms at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach to bring the total to around 156 rooms, while plans are underway to grow Sunbird Waterfront from 46 to 100 rooms. Temwa Mhango-Kanjadza, Head of Sales, Marketing and Distribution, noted that the investments are aimed at future-proofing the group's offering to meet the expectations of modern conference delegates. She also highlighted the opportunity for regional collaboration, suggesting that Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe could jointly bid for major international conferences – a strategy she argued would strengthen the competitiveness of all three destinations. Africa currently accounts for an estimated 3 per cent of the global business events market, though industry leaders believe this share could grow significantly with improved connectivity and infrastructure investment.
