Inyati Game Lodge Marks 40 Years With a Fresh New Look

The Sabi Sand lodge celebrates its 40th anniversary with refreshed guest spaces inspired by the landscape.

(Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, South Africa – August 2026) - Forty years after first welcoming guests to the banks of the Sand River, Inyati Game Lodge is marking the milestone with a refurbishment of its guest spaces. The refresh brings a new look to the much-loved Sabi Sand lodge while staying true to the character and sense of place that have defined it since 1986.

Hosting no more than 25 guests at a time, Inyati has always favoured intimacy over scale. That closeness carries through in the experience itself - exceptional game viewing, experienced guides and trackers, warm hospitality and the easy sense of connection that sees many guests return year after year.

Inspired by the Landscape

Led by interior designer Almi Prinsloo of Amalia Interiors, the refreshed interiors draw directly from the surrounding bush. The meandering Sand River, earthy textures of the bushveld and the shifting palette of the seasons informed a lighter, calmer approach to the guest rooms and shared spaces.

“Our vision was to create interiors that felt light and tranquil, while still belonging completely to Inyati and its surroundings,” says Prinsloo. “We wanted the landscape to lead the design rather than compete with it. The river, the grasses, the textures and colours of the bush all became part of the story.”

Warm, earthy tones are layered with natural materials including linen, textured cotton, leather, woven grasses and timber, creating spaces that feel refined without losing the relaxed character of a safari lodge.

In the guest rooms, considered design details bring more of the outdoors in. A sliding door adjoining the bathroom can be opened to let in natural light, fresh air and the sounds of the bush, while private outdoor showers offer another way to enjoy the surroundings. Woven grass wallpaper adds texture inside, subtly reflecting the indigenous grasses beyond the rooms.

A Place to Come Together

The guest lounge has also been revitalised, breathing new life into a space that has long served as Inyati's informal gathering place.

“The lounge was perhaps the most rewarding space to see come together,” says Prinsloo. “It really is the lodge's watering hole. After a game drive, people naturally find their way back there to talk about what they've seen, share stories and get to know one another. We wanted the design to make that sense of connection feel even more natural.”

Locally-sourced coffee is served throughout the day, while the bar remains a favourite meeting point for an evening sundowner. The reworked fireplace provides a warm focal point as the day winds down and conversations from the afternoon's game drive continue into the evening.

Forty years of Inyati

That emphasis on gathering feels particularly fitting in Inyati's 40th year. The lodge's story has been shaped as much by its people as its place - from experienced guides and trackers who know this part of the Sabi Sand intimately, to long-standing staff and guests whose connection with Inyati stretches back many years.

“Forty years is an incredibly special milestone for Inyati. There are so many memories tied to this lodge - the people who have worked here, the guests who have become friends and, of course, countless remarkable moments in the bush,” says General Manager Keith Jenkinson. 

“As we looked ahead to this anniversary, we wanted to give the lodge a fresh new chapter without losing the warmth and character that make it Inyati. These new spaces feel very much like us, and we're excited for guests, both old and new, to experience them.”

For all that has changed, the heart of the lodge remains much the same. There are still stories to swap after a game drive, familiar faces to welcome guests back, and the Sand River flowing past just beyond the lodge - much as there have been for the past 40 years.
