andBeyond Phinda Vlei Lodge Reopens Following Complete Refurbishment
Following a complete reimagining, andBeyond Phinda Vlei Lodge reopened in July 2026 as a new expression of one of Phinda’s most intimate safari lodges. Set between rare sand forest and a wildliferich wetland known locally as a vlei, the lodge lies within the 29,866-hectare (73,800-acre) andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, offering a different rhythm of safari. Here, wildlife, people and moments are naturally drawn together. With just six Suites, its refurbished spaces draw guests outdoors and further into the landscape, while retaining the sense of seclusion and privacy that have long defined the lodge. Welcoming children aged 12 and older, Phinda Vlei is particularly suited to couples, milestone celebrations and families travelling with older children.
At Phinda Vlei Lodge, the wild remains part of the experience throughout the day. The life-giving vlei continually draws wildlife around the lodge, so time spent here never feels separate from the wild. Elephants pause to drink nearby, birds gather around, and changing light transforms the landscape throughout the day. “Some of the most memorable safari moments are not the ones guests go looking for, but the ones that find them,” says Brendan Streak, andBeyond’s Managing Director for South Africa Lodges. “The reimagining of Phinda Vlei has allowed us to build around that idea. Spaces draw guests outdoors and keep them connected to the landscape, while wildlife continues to arrive and pass through. The safari does not end when the game drive does.”
The refurbishment has introduced a series of thoughtful updates across the lodge. The six thatched Suites have been extended, with larger bedrooms and sitting areas opening onto private salas and decks overlooking the vlei. Each 173 m² (1,862 ft²) Suite features a private pool overlooking the grassy wetland, a separate dressing room, personal bar and coffee station, as well as a spacious ensuite bathroom with a bath and indoor and outdoor showers. Air conditioning adds to the comfort, but the real luxury is the freedom to linger. Morning coffee can stretch a little longer. An afternoon can be spent beside the pool. And because the vlei remains in view, safari never feels far away.
The main guest areas have also been enhanced, with improved flow between spaces and a new library creating inviting places to gather, slow down with a book or simply watch life unfold around the lodge. Across the interiors, a contemporary interpretation of KwaZulu-Natal’s history and craft brings a renewed sense of place, layering local character with the lodge’s established warmth and personality.
Phinda Vlei offers far more than refined design, with a range of experiences and facilities that allow guests to enjoy the reserve in different ways. Twice-daily game drives reveal the remarkable diversity of Phinda, from iconic encounters with the Big Five to sightings of secretive species such as the suni, found in the reserve’s rare sand forest. Reflecting Phinda Vlei's deep connection to the landscape, sustainability has been thoughtfully woven into every aspect of the redesign. FSC-certified hardwoods have been incorporated into the flooring, decking and cladding, while reduced thatch coverage enhances insulation and energy efficiency. Locally crafted timber details and woven elements celebrate Zulu artisanship, supporting nearby economies and minimising transport emissions. Drawing inspiration from the area’s pine plantations, traditional weaving, beadwork and South African ceramics, bespoke joinery, furnishings and finishes create an expression of KwaZulu-Natal's rich cultural heritage. Ebonised timbers, brass accents and brass-studded grass cloth wallpaper add warmth and texture throughout the lodge, creating spaces that feel generous yet unpretentious, and private without feeling enclosed.
