South Africa Unveils R1 Billion Tourism Infrastructure Pipeline at Investment Conference
South Africa has identified eight investment-ready tourism infrastructure projects worth more than R1 billion, unveiled at the Sixth South Africa Investment Conference on 31 March 2026. The projects, which emerged from a government call to provinces and cities roughly 18 months ago, have undergone a rigorous evaluation process to ensure they are fully structured and bankable. Speaking at the Investment Opportunity Commission on Infrastructure, Tourism and Hospitality, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille described the pipeline as a shift in approach. "For the first time at this Investment Conference, tourism infrastructure investment projects are being presented not as ideas, but as opportunities," she said. To support the process, the department has established an investment facilitation unit aimed at streamlining engagement and reducing bureaucratic delays.
Panellists at the conference stressed that tourism must be treated as an infrastructure and competitiveness issue rather than a destination-driven sector alone, with projects requiring clear revenue models, defined risk allocation and long-term viability to attract capital. South African Airways Group CEO John Lamola highlighted air connectivity as a critical enabler, warning that even the strongest tourism offering would struggle without adequate access. "If we cannot bring people here, then even the best tourism product cannot succeed," he said. De Lille reinforced tourism's role as one of the most employment-intensive sectors, positioning infrastructure development as central to both job creation and broader economic growth.
