South Africa commits R12.5bn to overhaul six major land border posts

South Africa is undertaking its largest-ever investment in border infrastructure, with Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber announcing a R12.5 billion programme to demolish and rebuild six high-traffic land ports of entry. The multi-year public-private partnership will redevelop Lebombo, Beitbridge, Oshoek, Kopfontein, Maseru Bridge, and Ficksburg - collectively handling over 80% of the country's cross-border trade and passenger movement.

The overhaul aims to replace ageing, fragmented systems with integrated digital infrastructure, cutting congestion, reducing border clearance times, and strengthening enforcement against illegal migration and illicit trade. Schreiber noted that even a 5% reduction in clearance time could increase intra-regional exports by around 10%. For the tourism and travel industry, the practical outcomes are significant: shorter queues, more predictable movement of people and goods, and a meaningfully improved experience at some of southern Africa's busiest cross-border gateways.
