Mozambique Breaks Ground on Ressano Garcia Border Post Modernisation

Mozambique's Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Jorge Matlombe, laid the foundation stone for the modernisation of the Ressano Garcia One-Stop Border Post on 17 August, marking the start of construction on the main land crossing between Mozambique and South Africa. The project, estimated at approximately 980 million meticais, encompasses upgrades to the One-Stop Border Post, a Freight Road Terminal and Express Lanes, with the stated aim of improving efficiency along the Maputo Corridor, streamlining the movement of people and goods between the two countries.

The development is expected to address longstanding bottlenecks that currently cause significant truck queues on the EN4 highway, with knock-on effects on road safety, fuel consumption, delivery times and business operating costs. Minister Matlombe noted that the efficiency of the border infrastructure has a direct bearing on regional trade, supply chains, tax revenue and the performance of the Port of Maputo. For the tourism and travel sector, the modernisation of one of Southern Africa's busiest land border crossings represents a meaningful step towards smoother cross-border movement and improved regional connectivity.
