New UN-funded campaign promotes sustainable whale, dolphin, and turtle watching in Mauritius
Mauritius unveiled an innovative marine conservation awareness campaign on 31 July 2024, aimed at protecting endangered species and fostering sustainable tourism. The initiative, part of the "Conservation of Threatened Marine Megafauna Species in Mauritius" project, is funded by the UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme.
A video and poster highlighting best practices for whale, dolphin, and turtle watching will be displayed on Air Mauritius flights and at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport from 1 August. This effort addresses the growing popularity of marine wildlife tourism and its impact on vulnerable species.
The campaign reflects Mauritius' commitment to sustainable marine resource management, supported by policy enhancements, scientific research, and community education. It aligns with recent legislative changes, including the New Fisheries Act 2023 and upcoming amendments to marine wildlife regulations.
Key stakeholders, including the Mauritius Megafauna Conservation Organisation, Tourism Authority, and Air Mauritius, emphasised the importance of balancing biodiversity conservation with economic activities.
The initiative extends beyond airports, with hotels agreeing to feature the campaign video in rooms, further raising awareness among visitors about marine conservation in Mauritius.
