Malawi has become the 38th nation to join the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), a key African Union initiative aimed at liberalising air travel across the continent. The signing took place at the 38th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, with Malawi’s Foreign Minister, Honourable Nancy Tembo, formalising the commitment alongside AU Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid. This move is expected to enhance regional connectivity, lower airfares, and stimulate trade and tourism.

SAATM, part of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, seeks to create a seamless air transport sector by removing restrictions on airline operations between member states. Minister Tembo emphasised that Malawi’s accession reinforces the country’s commitment to economic integration and increased investment opportunities. As Africa works towards a unified aviation market, the AU continues to prioritise sustainable aviation fuels, safety improvements, and transport infrastructure projects, further strengthening the continent’s long-term mobility and economic growth.
