Lilongwe Wildlife Trust launches 2026–2032 strategy in Malawi

Lilongwe Wildlife Trust has launched a six-year strategy on 17 February 2026 under the banner People and Nature Together, setting out plans to save wildlife, deter nature crime and secure healthy landscapes across Malawi. The strategy focuses on coexistence measures, stronger justice systems and a new landscapes programme to restore priority ecosystems and support livelihoods – with implications for sustainable tourism and community resilience.

LWT cites a track record that includes co-leading 2017 legal reforms now rated among the strongest on wildlife crime by CITES, over 800 prosecutions with conviction rates above 90% for Listed Species cases, a 67% fall in ivory trafficking, more than 1,000 animal rescues and national education programmes reaching over 200,000 children. The 2026–2032 plan prioritises research, partnerships and innovative financing to address pressures from illegal trade, habitat loss and climate change, aligning with national priorities and international biodiversity targets.
