Kenya Renews Commitment to Mau Forest and Mara River Conservation

Kenya has reaffirmed its pledge to restore the Mau Forest Complex, the primary source of the Mara River, during the 14th Mara Day celebrations held in Butiama, Tanzania. Speaking at the event, Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eric Muuga, confirmed the government is actively implementing the 2015 conservation agreement with Tanzania, reclaiming over 21,600 hectares of forest land and planting more than 21 million indigenous trees to date.

Ongoing efforts include initiatives to reforest degraded areas, protect wetlands, and introduce alternative livelihoods such as beekeeping and agroforestry to reduce pressure on natural resources. These measures have led to rising river water levels, benefiting both ecosystems and local communities. The celebrations also featured a scientific forum that produced 11 joint recommendations, including a cross-border initiative for water monitoring and enhanced coordination among governments, scientific institutions, and citizens to sustain the Mara River Basin.
