Six Cheetah Cubs Born at Kariega Game Reserve in Eastern Cape
A female cheetah at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape has given birth to a litter of six cubs, with mother and young reported to be in good health. The cubs are being closely monitored in a secure boma, offering additional protection for the mother, who sustained a serious hunting injury shortly before giving birth and continues to receive veterinary care.
The birth carries significance beyond the reserve itself. The cubs form part of South Africa's managed cheetah metapopulation, overseen by the Endangered Wildlife Trust's Cheetah Range Expansion Project, which was formally established in 2011. The project manages cheetahs across dozens of fenced reserves as a single interconnected population, coordinating translocations to replicate the natural genetic dispersal that fencing would otherwise prevent. By the end of 2025, approximately 540 cheetahs formed part of the managed population, with more than 700 translocations coordinated since 2012. The programme has also contributed to cheetah reintroduction efforts in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe - making the six new arrivals a meaningful milestone for regional conservation.
