Giriyondo Border Post Reopens in Time for Easter, Restoring Kruger-Mozambique Safari Route
The Giriyondo Border Post, linking South Africa's Kruger National Park with Mozambique's Limpopo National Park, reopened on 31 March 2026 following a closure of nearly three months caused by severe flood damage. Intense rainfall across Limpopo province in January 2026 washed away roads, bridges and surrounding infrastructure, prompting the Border Management Authority to suspend operations at the crossing for safety reasons. SANParks carried out extensive repair works before receiving clearance to resume operations, with the reopening arriving just ahead of the Easter holiday period - one of the busiest travel periods for the Kruger region.
The Giriyondo crossing is one of the few official border posts situated entirely within a protected area, offering travellers a direct route through the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area - a peace park spanning South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The post operates from 08:00 to 16:00 between October and March, and 08:00 to 15:00 from April to September, and is best suited to 4x4 vehicles. Tour operators who had rerouted itineraries during the closure will now be able to restore original programmes, while local communities on both sides of the border are expected to benefit from renewed tourism activity. Travellers are advised to confirm road conditions, carry valid passports and park permits, and ensure their vehicles are suited to gravel terrain before making the crossing.
