Flooding Forces Temporary Closure of Pafuri and Giriyondo Border Posts Between South Africa and Mozambique
The Border Management Authority (BMA) suspended operations at the Pafuri and Giriyondo Ports of Entry following severe flooding in the far northern region of South Africa, affecting key crossings between South Africa and Mozambique. BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato confirmed the closure, citing rapidly rising water levels along the Luvuvhu River - which runs adjacent to the Pafuri Port of Entry - as an immediate safety risk to personnel, travellers and infrastructure. Pafuri Gate, the main access point to the port some 30 kilometres from the border crossing, has also been closed due to high water levels.
The Klein Letaba and Middlevlei rivers are currently overflowing, while the Letaba bridge is nearing full capacity due to continued heavy water inflow, according to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi. All BMA staff, Port Management Committee members and operational vehicles have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, with no injuries or infrastructure damage reported. Travellers intending to access the region are advised to use Punda Maria Gate, located 65 kilometres from Pafuri, as an alternative entry point. The BMA confirmed it is monitoring the situation closely in collaboration with relevant authorities and park management, with operations set to resume once conditions are deemed safe.
