Five New Safari Lodges Raising the Bar for Luxury Travel Across Africa

A new wave of high-end safari lodge openings is reshaping the luxury travel landscape across Africa, with properties in South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Botswana placing equal emphasis on design, immersive experiences, and conservation alongside wildlife encounters. Among the standout openings is Mantis Hiddn, which launched in March within an 800-hectare private reserve inside Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape. The off-grid, solar-powered mountain retreat features 12 suites and two four-bedroom villas with infinity pools and private butler service, built from locally-sourced materials. In Tanzania, luxury hotel brand Auberge Collection has made its Africa debut with Auberge Safari, a portfolio of nine lodges and camps spanning the Serengeti, Lake Manyara, and the Greater Mwiba Protected Wildlife Area, bringing together established operators Legendary Expeditions and Chem Chem Safari under a single brand. Also in Tanzania, Banyan Tree has opened Ubuyu in Ruaha National Park - its first safari-focused "Escape" property on the continent - offering a design-led, wellness-oriented experience in one of Africa's least-visited yet most biodiverse parks.

In Zambia, Anantara Kafue River Tented Camp has opened inside Kafue National Park, one of Africa's largest protected areas, with guests arriving by helicopter to a small collection of elevated luxury tents above the Kafue River, each with a private plunge pool and dedicated boat and skipper. The property forms part of Anantara's 2026 Tented Camps launch, previously announced as part of the brand's 25th anniversary expansion. Looking ahead, Singita will make its Botswana debut in December 2026 with Singita Elela in the Okavango Delta, promising exclusive access to one of Africa's most biodiverse regions through a small number of elevated suites with a strong focus on low-impact tourism and conservation-led travel.
