Ethiopian Airlines Converts Six Boeing 787 Dreamliner Options into Firm Orders
Ethiopian Airlines has converted six previously held options into firm orders for Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, fully exercising commitments from its 2023 landmark order with the manufacturer. The Addis Ababa-based carrier, which already operates Africa's largest 787 Dreamliner fleet, will deploy the additional widebody jets to expand its intercontinental network and increase cargo capacity on high-demand long-haul routes spanning Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as key intra-African connections.
The order reinforces Ethiopian Airlines' position as the continent's leading aviation group, currently serving over 145 global destinations with a fleet of more than 170 aircraft averaging seven years in age. Group CEO Mesfin Tasew described the conversion as a proud milestone reflecting the airline's sustainable growth trajectory and commitment to operational excellence. For Africa's broader tourism and connectivity landscape, the fleet expansion signals continued confidence in long-haul demand into and out of the continent, with Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport further cementing its role as a primary intercontinental hub linking Africa to the rest of the world.
