Cape Town International set for R21.7bn upgrade – works start in March
Airports Company South Africa will invest R21.7 billion in airport infrastructure over the next five years, with major upgrades at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) beginning in March. CTIA will start with a domestic arrivals upgrade, followed by plans for a new runway, expanded domestic and international terminals, and enhanced security systems. ACSA said works will be phased to minimise disruption, with areas cordoned off and passengers redirected via alternative routes and temporary facilities.
CTIA led recovery among South Africa’s three main international airports in 2024/25 at 98% of pre‑COVID levels, ahead of O.R. Tambo at 89% and King Shaka at 83%. The airport’s busiest day was 28 December, when 39,214 passengers passed through, and December on‑time performance reached 81.2%. Management said improved peak‑season operations were driven by stronger staffing and maintenance readiness and noted that expansions are being undertaken at airlines’ request – measures expected to support capacity and connectivity as demand grows.
