Zanzibar sets sights on halal tourism market
Zanzibar is positioning itself as a leading destination for halal tourism in East Africa, with plans to revise its tourism policy to attract visitors from Islamic countries.
The island's government announced the initiative following a visit by prominent Muslim preacher Mufti Ismail Menk from Zimbabwe. Tourism Minister Mudrik Soraga confirmed that the administration will review its tourism policy to accommodate halal-friendly services, which include alcohol-free hotels, gender-separated facilities, and prayer rooms.
President Hussein Mwinyi emphasised that the initiative aims to welcome all visitors whilst respecting Islamic principles. "We aim to make Zanzibar a place where everyone can enjoy their holiday or conference peacefully, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or background," he said.
The announcement comes ahead of the Zanzibar Tourism and Investment Show, scheduled for 25-26 October, which is expected to attract more than 250 international stakeholders. The event will showcase the island's potential for tourism investment and development.
Zanzibar's Stone Town, with its distinctive Arab, Persian, British and Indian architectural influences, is seen as a key attraction for cultural tourists. The island's Swahili heritage, dating back to the 1698 Omani Sultanate, is expected to particularly appeal to visitors from Islamic nations.
