Zambia Launches Livingstone Development Plan to Strengthen Tourism Appeal

Zambia has launched the Livingstone Town Centre Development Programme, a government-led initiative aimed at revitalising the city’s infrastructure to establish it as a 24-hour tourism hub. Announced on 23 September by Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba, with support from the World Bank and Livingstone’s Mayor, the project includes the upgrade of 8.3 km of roads, installation of 976 streetlights, and improvements to public spaces to enhance urban liveability and visitor experience.

The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to place tourism at the centre of Zambia’s economic development. Minister Sikumba and World Bank Country Manager Dr Achim Fock underscored the sector’s potential to drive job creation and cross-border growth, particularly within the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier region. The government views Livingstone’s transformation as key to elevating its tourism offering beyond a stopover destination, aligning with President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to unlock tourism as a driver of inclusive and sustainable growth.
