Zambia and Egypt Strengthen Ties on Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development

Zambia and Egypt have reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation on environmental protection and sustainable development following a high-level meeting in Lusaka. Zambia's Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Elton Mposha, met with Egypt's Ambassador to Zambia, Myada Essam, with discussions focusing on water resource management, environmental safeguards, and sustainable petroleum development. Minister Mposha underscored the importance of protecting Zambia's abundant freshwater resources - including rivers, lakes, and wetlands - while ensuring that energy development does not compromise natural ecosystems or public health.

A Memorandum of Understanding on environmental protection between the two countries is currently under review and is expected to formalise technical cooperation and joint initiatives. Ambassador Essam announced that a delegation from Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, comprising companies specialising in environmental safety, is expected to visit Zambia between June and July 2026. Both sides expressed confidence that the ongoing engagement will serve as a model for broader regional collaboration in managing the environmental challenges associated with the petroleum sector.
