World’s 1,500th bat species confirmed in Equatorial Guinea

Researchers have confirmed a new species of pipistrelle bat, Pipistrellus etula, from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, officially recognised as the world’s 1,500th bat species. Found in montane forests on Biao and Basilé peaks and validated through morphological and genetic analyses, the discovery underscores the biodiversity still undocumented in Central Africa – and adds to the region’s conservation value for nature-based tourism.

First suspected from specimens collected in 1989, the species was confirmed after additional captures in 2024. P. etula appears confined to high-altitude habitats that, while within protected zones, face pressures from construction, small-scale logging and climate change, indicating a restricted range and need for targeted protection. As vesper bats consume large numbers of insect pests and disease vectors, safeguarding Bioko’s montane ecosystems has ecological and community benefits.
