Uganda backs Trans‑Africa Tourism campaign

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has pledged support for the Trans‑Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign, endorsing visa‑free travel across the continent to boost regional cooperation. The commitment was made on 17 November 2025 during a meeting with a Ghanaian delegation and Uganda’s tourism officials at State Lodge, underscoring plans to market multi‑country tourism circuits and ease movement for visitors.

Uganda Tourism Board and Ministry leaders said visa facilitation would enhance competitiveness and enable joint promotion of attractions across Africa. Citing research that visa restrictions can cut travel flows by up to 63 per cent, officials linked the initiative to Uganda’s recovery – international arrivals rose 7.7 per cent in 2024 to 1,371,895, with 89.2 per cent from mainland Africa. Overseas arrivals grew 8.9 per cent to 137,411, led by Asia. The campaign aligns with national targets under NDP IV, which projects tourism could contribute USD 50 billion to GDP by 2040.
