Príncipe, 23rd of August – A remarkable journey of dedication and collaboration has led to a significant milestone in the lives of the Sundy community. A visionary initiative, driven by HBD Príncipe and the Regional Government of Principe, supported by UN-Habitat, is now set to reshape the future of this community by improving the living conditions.

Roça Sundy, an area historically significant for its ties to the community's past, was conceded to HBD Príncipe by the Regional Government of Principe on February 9, 2011. Recognizing the importance of sustainable development and community well-being, HBD formally requested UN-Habitat's expertise to formulate a project proposal that would uplift the living conditions of Roça Sundy's residents while respecting their human rights and minimizing ecological impacts. Both the central government of São Tomé and Príncipe and the Regional Government of Principe Island have also extended their support to UN-Habitat for this endeavour.

The Terra Prometida sustainable resettlement project was established, designed not only to provide secure and modern housing but also to create an environment conducive to education, healthcare, economic growth, and overall well-being. HBD's substantial contribution of EUR 6,600,000 to the project underscores its dedication to fostering positive change on the island of Príncipe.

To celebrate this turning point, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Under-Secretary General and UN-Habitat Executive Director, has been invited by the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe to visit the country from August 13th to 18th, 2023. A key highlight of her visit will be an event in Terra Prometida on August 16th, where she will join forces with the founder of the HBD Príncipe group, Mark Shuttleworth, to officially inaugurate the resettlement process. This event is poised to shine a global spotlight on an initiative that promises to transform the lives of hundreds within the Roça Sundy community.

“The community of Roça Sundy has worked carefully over many years to shape their new village, with legal title and dedicated infrastructure to serve their needs. I would like to recognise and appreciate the way they and their council have worked through complex and emotive questions and compromises, in partnership with UN-Habitat and HBD, to realise this dream. While this is only the beginning, it is a tremendous achievement, and a milestone to celebrate on Príncipe.” Mark Shuttleworth stated.

As the project moves closer to its completion, the Roça Sundy community stands on the brink of a brighter future, one that will be defined by improved living conditions, enhanced opportunities, and strengthened community bonds.
