Tanzania Aims to Position Dodoma as Central Tourism Hub
Tanzania is rolling out a strategic plan to develop Dodoma and surrounding areas into a tourism hub for the country’s central zone. The government, in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB), and private stakeholders, is working to strengthen infrastructure and tourism services around key sites such as the Mkungunero and Swaga Swaga reserves, and the UNESCO-listed Kondoa Irangi rock paintings.
Planned upgrades include road improvements, new three-star hotels, enhanced social services, and expanded tourism offerings to attract both domestic and international visitors. The initiative is supported by ongoing major infrastructure projects like the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Msalato International Airport, which are expected to boost accessibility. Tourism figures in the region have already shown growth, with domestic visitors rising from 1,287 in 2018 to 7,654 in 2024, and international numbers increasing over threefold in the past four years.
