South Africa’s Glamping Boom Good News for Sustainable Tourism
South Africa’s glamping sector is emerging as a key player in the country’s tourism landscape, offering eco-conscious travellers a blend of comfort and nature across diverse regions. From private tented camps in the Bushveld to off-grid domes and open-air stargazing suites in the Karoo, glamping is reshaping travel experiences by connecting guests with the country's natural beauty while supporting rural tourism and small business development.
The trend was in focus at the inaugural Glamping Expo held in Johannesburg in early August, where South African Tourism highlighted its alignment with the country’s G20 sustainability ambitions. Speaking at the event, CMO Thembisile Sehloho called glamping “where the untamed spirit of Africa meets curated comfort,” noting its potential to drive inclusive growth. Destinations such as !Xaus Lodge in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Camp Canoe in the Winelands exemplify the growing variety of glamping offerings tailored to different traveller interests, including wildlife, coastlines, and remote escapes.
