South Africa plans high-speed rail link between Gauteng and Limpopo
A new high-speed rail project connecting Pretoria to Polokwane is being developed as part of South Africa's National Rail Masterplan, with future extensions planned to Louis Trichardt and Musina.
The 420-kilometre route will pass through Hammanskraal, Bela-Bela, and Mokopane, creating a direct corridor to Zimbabwe. The project was approved by Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during a meeting in Mookgophong in October.
Gauteng Tourism Authority spokesperson Barba Gaoganediwe said the connection aims to reduce traffic and strengthen economic ties between the provinces. The development complements the Gautrain's planned 2026 expansion, which will add 150km of track and 19 stations across Gauteng.
Both provinces plan to implement joint tourism initiatives, including a golfing route and shared events. While construction dates are yet to be confirmed, the masterplan is expected to be completed by end-2025.
A joint Project Manager for the initiative is still to be appointed.
