South Africa Hosts G20 Tourism Working Group Ahead of Africa’s Travel Indaba

South Africa has opened the 2nd G20 Tourism Working Group Meeting in Durban, marking the first time G20 tourism talks are being held on African soil. The meeting, held on 11 May 2025, precedes Africa’s Travel Indaba and underscores the country's status as the only African G20 member. Addressing delegates, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to global tourism cooperation under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”, and emphasised the importance of aligning the G20 agenda with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
With over 130 G20-related meetings scheduled in South Africa this year, the event is seen as a platform for investment, job creation, and elevating Africa’s tourism voice globally. The Durban meeting will influence outcomes for the upcoming G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Mpumalanga and the Heads of State Summit in Johannesburg later this year. Key focus areas include tourism financing, AI and start-up support, air connectivity, and resilience. Delegates are also set to attend Africa’s Travel Indaba, with over 1,300 exhibitors and 1,200 international buyers, providing opportunities to engage directly with Africa’s growing tourism sector.
