Uganda Positions Rwenzori Marathon as Tourism and Investment Showcase
Uganda's government is using the 2026 Rwenzori Marathon, scheduled for 22 August in Kasese, as a platform to market the country as a tourism and investment destination. Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang told Parliament that more than 10 million people globally are projected to follow the event, with participants from nearly 45 countries expected. The government has contributed Shs3.7 billion towards the marathon through the National Council of Sports, primarily to fund the prize purse. Last year's edition attracted 18,000 visitors from 36 countries and 6,000 runners, of whom 21% came from outside Uganda.
The event's growth has highlighted both opportunities and infrastructure gaps in the Kasese region. The Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Suzan Nakawuki, acknowledged accommodation shortfalls but encouraged local residents to capitalise on the influx by offering homestay options and establishing roadside services, souvenirs and hospitality businesses. MPs also called for investment in athlete development facilities and hotel capacity to sustain the marathon's long-term tourism impact. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa used the occasion to urge government to deepen its partnership with organisers and explore developing a major Kampala marathon to further extend Uganda's presence on the international sporting calendar.
