Radisson Opens First Net Zero Hotel in Africa Near Kruger National Park
The 138-room Radisson Safari Hoedspruit, located near Kruger National Park in South Africa, has been unveiled as Radisson Hotel Group's first verified net zero hotel on the continent. The property is the group's 10th Verified Net Zero Hotel and is notable for being one of the first managed - rather than leased - properties to achieve the certification, which is independently verified by TÜV Rheinland and requires hotels to use renewable energy, reduce Scope 3 emissions, and offset remaining emissions through carbon removal credits.
The development marks a strategic shift for Radisson, which has until now carried the costs of its net zero programme primarily through leased properties on its own books. In this instance, the property owner has funded the net zero investment, anticipating a swift return through premium room rates. Radisson has indicated it plans to extend the Verified Net Zero scheme to more managed and franchised hotels from 2027, as it works towards a target of 100 certified net zero hotels by 2030.
