SADC Tourism Alliance Appoints Steering Committee to Bolster Regional Collaboration
Tourism leaders from across Southern Africa have elected a new steering committee to guide the SADC Tourism Alliance, a private-sector driven platform aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and addressing longstanding barriers to tourism growth. With intra-regional tourism accounting for less than 25% of total arrivals and air connectivity still limited, the committee will work to unlock the region’s tourism potential and improve coordination across the 16 SADC member states.
Headed by Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, CEO of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, the steering committee includes representatives from Madagascar, Malawi, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Their immediate focus includes improving regional access, boosting Southern Africa’s tourism reputation, and ensuring institutional sustainability. The SADC Tourism Alliance, launched in 2022, operates in alignment with the SADC Tourism Programme 2020–2030 and is supported by the EU- and German-funded NatureAfrica/Climate Resilience programme, implemented by GIZ.
