Nigeria Rolls Out Cashless Payment System at Major Airports
Nigeria's Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) has launched a nationwide cashless and contactless payment system, starting with Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The initiative aims to improve transparency, efficiency, and customer experience at airport entry points such as car parks, gates, and VIP lounges. Expected to increase revenue by up to 75% as it scales, the system marks a significant shift in the country’s airport operations and sets a benchmark for digital transformation across the African aviation sector.
The move responds to long-standing concerns over revenue leakage from non-aeronautical sources and aligns with global standards for seamless, secure transactions. As all payments become electronic and traceable, FAAN anticipates broader benefits, including financial inclusion, reduced congestion, and improved data accuracy. Plans are in place for a national rollout by early 2026, supported by extensive public education campaigns. The development is being closely watched by regional stakeholders as a potential model for modernising airport infrastructure and enhancing competitiveness across Africa’s travel industry.
